The Spark: Spring into Volunteer Action!

A Message from EXP Staff & Alum, Daisy Boeckmann

Dear fellow ITEP/EXP alums,

As an EXP alum from Carson HS Class of 2017 (Go Colts!), I am excited to bring you more alumni involvement opportunities in the coming months! I am now working with Lisa Lampon, Vice President of Operations (whom you met in the last newsletter), to deliver alumni and young adult programs going forward.

Spring is here and as you might remember, this is the last stretch for the EXP Internship Program: Powered by Prologis, where we head into mock interviews to practice our skills before participating in the actual internship matching interviews. You might also remember the internship placement experience being a bit scary, yet quite exciting, and that you got through it with some help from EXP’s volunteers and internship hosts.

It is now our turn to give back! You can sign up to help with mock interviews and help talk to your employer about hosting an intern this summer. You can find more information on both of these volunteer opportunities below.

I cannot wait to meet you all online and in person! Please let me know what you would like to see more from the EXP Alumni Network! Connect with me at daisy@expfuture.org

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Daisy Boeckmann

Alumni Spotlight: Celenia Caballero

Celenia Caballero, Phineas Banning High School ‘14

Celenia Caballero
Talent Acquisition Specialist, P2S
Class of 2014, Phineas Banning High School, International Trade Academy

Celenia always knew she wanted to help people. Her EXP internship at the former Los Angeles Councilmember Joe Buscaino helped her realize she could apply her passion through networking and mentoring.

She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology and is now working with the human resources team at P2S Inc. to participate in college career fairs around the country and run an internship program. (Join her team!)

Celenia stays connected to EXP staff, board members, and the alumni network, including lifelong mentor and friend Gaby Medina, who is also a mentor to many other EXP alum, including EXP Board Member Victor Ibarra (Banning HS ’11).

Her connection to EXP continues as Celenia volunteers her help with EXP programs when possible. “I would like students for years to come to have the same experience I had,” said Celenia. “I know firsthand EXP is a world of opportunity for future leaders, and I would like to pass that on to every student I can.”

Ask Your Employer About Hosting a Summer Intern

Did you know that 89% of employers said high school students with internship experience will have a competitive advantage when looking for a college internship or full-time job? Hosting an EXP intern this summer will give our students that advantage, unlock doors, and prepare them to succeed in school, career and life.

Host one of our interns for four weeks from Monday, July 9 through Friday, August 4, for 20-30 hours per week (80-100 hours total).

Never hosted a high school intern before? No problem! EXP team will help you every step of the way! Submit interest here or contact Jasmine Scales, Program Manager, Internship & Outreach, at jasmine@expfuture.org for more information.
