Wednesday, May 15: Sato Academy of Math & Science - 9th Grade Project Demonstration Day

Who we are looking for: Professionals with design, engineering, occupational therapy, or disability assistance backgrounds.

What is the project? Students have spent the year designing assistive devices for LBUSD peers as part of the Make:Able challenge, supported by industry feedback sessions and a visit to Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center. This is their opportunity to showcase what they've built and the design process behind it as well as the collaboration and connection involved with the student who they are designing their product for. Your perspective would be incredibly meaningful to them.

What is your role? Panel judges to engage with student teams, provide feedback, and score poster presentations using a simple rubric.

  • Time commitment: 1-hour per period. Period 1 (8:45), Period 2 (9:25), Period 3 (10:15), Period 4 (11:00), Period 5 (12:30), Period 6 (1:15), Period 7 (2:00), and Period 8 (2:48).

Tuesday, May 19: Sato Academy of Math & Science - 11th Grade Engineering Demonstration Day

Who we are looking for: Engineers.

What is the project? 11th-grade engineering students are designing and building an automated factory system. Student teams will code a processing unit that receives input data, interprets values, and communicates commands to output devices. On Demo Day, students will present their completed systems, showcasing their mechanical design, systems thinking, and programming skills.

What is your role? Panel judges to engage with student teams, provide feedback, and score poster presentations using a simple rubric.

  • Time commitment: 2 hours at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Wednesday, May 20: Gardena High School - Mock Interview

  • Time commitment: About an hour and 45 minutes per period. Do one or stay for both! Period 1 (8:30 am to 10:14 am) and Period 2 (10:15 am to 11:47 am).

Wednesday, May 20: Lawndale High School - Senior Defense

Lawndale HS Biomedical Academy is looking for seasoned professionals who can provide high-level insights and rigorous evaluation for our students as they defend their final projects. While our students certainly benefit from your expertise, our evaluators often find the experience equally rewarding. Participating as a Senior Defense Evaluator offers several key benefits such as shaping the next generation and an insight to fresh perspectives. 

  • Time commitment: 1 hour per period. Period 1 (8:30), Period 2 (9:31), Period 3 (10:43), Period 4 (11:44), Period 5 (1:20), and Period 6 (2:21).

Thursday, May 21: Sato Academy of Math & Science - 10th Grade Rollercoaster Demonstration Day

Who we are looking for: Engineers and other industry professionals.

What is the project? 10th-grade engineering students are designing rollercoaster tracks and coding automated lift systems. On Demo Day, students present their final projects, highlighting mechanical design and programming skills.

Bonus: Career Roundtable: Guests will also join small-group discussions where students ask questions about career pathways. No prep required.

What is your role? Panel judges to engage with student teams, provide feedback, and score poster presentations using a simple rubric.

  • Time commitment: 3 hours - 8:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

Thursday, May 21: Sato Academy of Math & Science - 12th Grade Engineering Capstone Demonstration Night

Who we are looking for: Engineers and other industry professionals.

What is the project? 12th-grade engineering students spent a year on the engineering design process to develop a capstone project. On Demonstration Day, students will present their user-centered research, iterative prototyping, and innovative design improvements.

What is your role? Panel judges to engage with student teams, provide feedback, and score poster presentations using a simple rubric.

  • Time commitment: 2.5 hours. 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
