New year, new opportunities for alumni to get involved!

A Message from EXP Staff & Alum, Daisy Boeckmann

Dear fellow ITEP/EXP alums,

I hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start! Before jumping into what’s ahead for EXP, I want to thank everyone who attended EXP’s LEVEL UP: “Help Me Find My Passion” Career Industry Panel in December! With 5 career panelists and 24 EXP alum/current college student participants, it was an amazing turnout!

Our annual Women in STEM Career Day is BACK Thursday, February 29 and we want YOU to join us! From exhibiting to speaking on a STEM career panel, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities for EXP alums to get involved.

Talk to your employer about hosting an EXP intern this summer! Attend an upcoming virtual informational session to learn more about EXP’s Internship Program: Powered by Prologis and how you can help change a student’s life.

I’d love to connect in-person or virtually with fellow EXP alum to chat about ways we can continue to grow our EXP alumni network in 2024! Email me at daisy@expfuture.org to schedule a coffee chat, or stay in the loop by joining our Alumni Facebook Group.

I look forward to connecting soon!

Jama Willis ’21
Barstow High School

Alumni Spotlight: Jama Willis ‘21

A.B. Degree Candidate in Government and African & African American Studies, Harvard University
Barstow High School, Class of 2021

Back in 2020, Jama Willis was one of EXP’s fully virtual interns. His summer internship with the California State Assembly, Assemblyman Mike Gipson’s office set him on the course of where he is today, a student at Harvard University where he is doing a joint concentration in Government and African and African American Studies, planning to attend law school in the near future.

An important piece of advice from EXP that Jama carries with him to this day is “your network is your net worth.” “I recently worked in D.C. at the U.S Department of State, and I quickly learned that every place D.C. is ran by who you know, who you have access to, and what information you can get,” said Jama. “I would implore EXP interns now to build up their networks because you never know who will help you in the future.”

We are proud to have caught up with Jama before he took off to St. Catherine’s College at Oxford University for this spring semester abroad, studying International Law and Colonial History, and will work toward his senior thesis focused on decriminalization of anti-homosexual laws in the Caribbean. We look forward to following his future success and impact as a public servant!

We’d love to feature your success story in a future newsletter! Please email Judy Ramos, EXP Marketing Coordinator, at judyramos@expfuture.org.
