Press Release: EXP to Host First In-person GPS Your Future® Since 2019

CSU Dominguez Hills, California (Friday, Sept. 30, 2022) -- EXP – The opportunity engine is a Southern California 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that believes every student should have equal access to education, experiences and career opportunities that will help them reach their full potential. EXP is hosting its first in-person event after two years of virtual experiences—2022 GPS Your Future®—on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, at CSU Dominguez Hills from 9 am until 2:30 pm. They are expecting 550 9th and 10th-grade students from 11 EXP-supported high schools, including Phineas Banning, Carson, San Pedro, Gardena, and Barstow High Schools to attend this annual career-discovery event, which will be COVID-compliant.

Through programs like GPS Your Future, Women in STEM Career Day, and Young Fellows Program for boys of color, to name a few, EXP builds resilient and confident high school students and graduates and connects young people with real-world experience and career possibilities.

Come learn how EXP prepares students for a better life through this dynamic career discovery event where students explore their own futures through a series of activities from keynote speaker Edna Nerona, career journey breakout panels, and exhibit hall where local and international organizations and industry leaders bring awareness to high schoolers about the multitude of career opportunities available to them.

Amy Grat

“When I walk around the GPS expo hall and talk to industry exhibitors, the comments I hear over and over again are some variation of “I wish I had something like this when I was in high school!” And it’s true.  Most of us adults didn’t have any exposure to any career or industry other than what those in our family did or what we saw on TV. We definitely didn’t know HOW you could get to that job! Where do we start? Do we need college? Nothing we were learning in school gave us a clear direction,” shares Amy Grat, CEO, EXP.

“EXP created GPS Your Future® in 2010 to connect the dots between the classroom and a future career. Like the navigation system in our cars, GPS Your Future shows students that there are multiple paths they can choose to reach their career and life goals. Our career panelists and exhibitors provide helpful guidance on how to avoid potholes and find the fast lane.  Students can explore options and ask industry professionals these questions in a low-risk environment, surrounded by people who are excited about sharing their careers and industries.

“We are thrilled to see this program grow over the years, from a handful of exhibitors and students to over 500 students and 100 volunteers expected this year.  Every student deserves a personal GPS for their future, and we are working hard to make that a reality for the students we serve.”

David A. Gamboa

David A. Gamboa, Interim Chief of Staff, Office of the President, California State University, Dominguez Hills adds, “CSU Dominguez Hills is looking forward to once again having students from EXP on our campus for GPS Your Future. Our university educates the future leaders of the region. This annual career discovery event enables these future leaders to explore those opportunities.”

This event is made possible by the generosity of our partners and sponsors like Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Port of Los Angeles, CSU Dominguez Hills, and Prologis.
