We have 84 summer interns! And they need your help.

A Message from EXP CEO Amy Grat

My heart is full to see 84 interns ready for EXP Internship Program: Powered by Prologis summer internship placements this July! I couldn’t be more grateful to our host sites (see next segment) and our EXP team for their collaboration in making these opportunities available for our students.

Now, we need your help in ensuring equity and access for all interns.

Over my past 13 years as the CEO of EXP, I have seen our students transform over the year-long internship journeys from juniors without a plan for the future into rising seniors with their sights set on college and the career of their dreams.

Take Velinda Meza, Phineas Banning High School Class of 2004. Her journey to become a Boeing engineer started with her EXP summer internship at the Port of Los Angeles. After graduating high school, Velinda accepted an offer to go back to POLA and chose to work in the Engineering Division. This experience inspired her to pursue a degree in Engineering.

Velinda now works as a Reliability Engineer for Boeing, supporting their Defense and Space programs.

Every dollar helps our summer interns explore their college and career inspiration. Please consider making a gift today!

Thank You Summer 2023 Internship Hosts!

Partner Spotlight: Yusen Logistics

Yusen Logistics is a longstanding EXP partner who has demonstrated passionate advocacy for education and youth development and has set the bar for industry leadership in support of EXP’s mission and the broader community.

Yusen Logistics continues to be a key partner in helping EXP build the next generation workforce through their volunteers from participating in our career discovery events and hosting worksite visits, to having a seat on the Carson High School’s Advisory Board. In 2014, Yusen Logistics took its first two EXP interns and has continued to do so every year. Many EXP graduates came back to work for the company full-time!

It is this level of dedication to youth development that earned Yusen Logistics the EXP’s Keeper of the Flame Award in 2019.

Thank you for your commitment to our community, Yusen Logistics!

Your Support in Action

EXP’s Young Fellows Program 2022-2023 Culmination

On April 13, students, parents, and mentors came together to celebrate the culmination of the 2022–2023 EXP’s Young Fellows Program (YFP) at Gardena High School. 51 students from 9 high schools and 31 mentors participated in the program for a series of four workshops last school year.

Launched January 2021, YFP connects high school-age boys of color to mentors representative of their own experiences, communities, and backgrounds. YFP is designed to engage and empower youth through a series of meaningful and impactful mentorship sessions virtually, through a social justice lens.

Special thanks to our volunteer mentors for their commitment to the program, and to our generous sponsors Hancock & Julia Banning Educational Fund and Port of Los Angeles for their support!

Spring into Opportunities at Barstow High School and Central High School

EXP and Barstow High School’s Mojave Express Logistics Academy held their 12th annual Career Fair on March 28.

All 1,439 Barstow students connected with over 80 representatives from more than 20 local and national employers, including our major partner BNSF Railway and local supporters like Barstow Community College, Barstow Community Hospital, Barstow Police Department, and Desert Community Bank.

Later in April, industry coaching sessions finished with a bang at Barstow and Central high schools with a special visit from the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) team from the Barstow Police Department. In total, 49 students from Barstow and 18 students from Central high schools received industry coaching this school year.
