Insider: Record-breaking Summer Internship Cohort is Eager to Begin Their Journeys
EXP Summer 2026 Internship Class is the Largest Cohort to Date!
Every summer, an internship changes a student's future.
This year, 180 students will begin that journey through the EXP Internship Program—the largest internship class in our organization's history—a 22% increase over last year!
These rising high school seniors will gain experience at 66 host sites, including 21 new partners joining the EXP family, creating meaningful opportunities for career exploration, professional growth, and economic mobility.
All it takes is an opportunity, and the EXP Internship Program has changed many lives! Our 2026 Full Circle Alumni Award honoree, Christine Piña, found her lifelong career with the Port of Los Angeles and is now helping to provide the same opportunities to our students.

Partner Spotlight: Yusen Terminals
This summer, Emma R. from Sato Academy of Math and Science is gaining hands-on experience at Yusen Terminals (YTI), one of EXP's longest-standing internship partners.
As a supporter for more than two decades and as an internship host site since 2014, YTI has helped students connect classroom learning to meaningful careers in the maritime industry through EXP's career discovery days and hosting our summer interns.
“Our partnership with EXP lets us connect with local students and help them see what's possible after high school," said Fran Ohlheiser, Director of Communications. "We're proud to be a part of their journey."
EXPression Programs in Action
All it takes is one caring adult to make a difference in a student’s life. We are grateful for our dedicated EXPression program volunteers who inspire and guide our students on a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and creative expression.
Career Success Explorer Mentorship Program
Another successful year with our mentorship program in partnership with El Camino College and the Centinela Valley Unified High School District. 27 juniors from Lawndale and Leuzinger High Schools were matched with college mentors to set their goals, discover their strengths, and craft an elevator pitch over 5 workshops.
Industry Volunteers Barstow Help Students Build Leadership Skills
10 industry volunteers guided nearly 70 students from Barstow and Central High Schools with goal setting and helped them develop leadership skills. As a treat for the last of the 6-workshop series, Barstow Police Department demonstrated how to lift fingerprints and let the students try their hands at it too!
Sato Students Bring Innovation to Life
More than 120 EXP volunteers supported engineering and biomedical students at Sato Academy throughout the school year, providing feedback from the earliest stages of project development through their final presentations.
Students worked on different projects, including miniature roller coasters, a manufacturing assembly line, and an assistive medical device.

Carson HS M.E.Di.A students Toured Netflix Hollywood Headquarters
Special thanks to Joshua Gutierrez, a Barstow HS graduate, who made this incredible workplace tour happen for 23 students from Carson HS M.E.Di.A magnet!
After a brief career journey talk from Josh and a career panel by Netflix employees, students experienced an afternoon in the life of a Netflixer–enjoying a gourmet lunch overlooking the city and meeting in the boardroom where major entertainment deals are made, and, of course, enjoying all the free snacks!
Barstow Students Aimed for the Stars
Barstow HS STEAM pathway students explored careers in space exploration and science with Peraton/NASA Goldstone Deep Space Communication Complex and High Desert Astronomical Society. The Society also brought telescopes, giving students the opportunity to explore the night sky firsthand. Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!

The future is calling, Class of 2026! We are so proud of our graduates from the Los Angeles Harbor to the high desert of Barstow.
Whether they're heading to college, launching careers, joining the military, or exploring new opportunities, our program alumni carry with them the skills, confidence, and connections they've built through EXP.
But EXP support does not end here.
As part of our EXPansion programs, we connect our program alumni with resources and mentorship beyond high school to ensure successful transitions to post-secondary success and fulfilling careers.
